I can’t believe that the school year is nearly half way over!  The cross country season is winding down and track is right around the corner.  As I said in the past, I will try to send these notes out to you as your president of the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC) from time to time to further help inform you of your association and the events that impact our great sport.

Web Site

Please visit our web site often.  I find this the best way to keep up on things.  www.iatccc.org  News of events, opportunity to take part in the coach’s polls, register for the IATCCC clinic, and many other things are posted on the web site.  Please use this very helpful tool.

Upcoming Meeting

The next IATCCC Sectional Council meeting will be on Sunday, December 9 at Lawrence Central High School.  The meeting will begin at noon; see agenda on the website for more details.  You are welcome to attend and take an active role in your association.  Again, make it a Christmas shopping trip to Indy and join us.

IATCCC State Coaches Clinic

  • The IATCCC Annual Track & Field Clinic will be held on Thursday, January 31 – Saturday, February 2 @ the Sheraton-Keystone Hotel (usual spot).  Speakers will include Charles Clinton, USATF Junior Elite Coach, who will give a very thorough series of sessions (5) on sprint training and technique.  Again the lineup for throws coaches will be very impressive with Larry Judge (USATF National Chairman of Coaches Education in the Throws) and John Smith (Southern Illinois University) headlining the throws sessions.  Dr. Steve Simons will be there to cover injury prevention for athletes/runners.  Andy Keffaber (Westfield) will present sessions specifically for Junior High coaches.  You will get to meet Matt Roe (Butler University) who will speak on distance training and the Flow Theory of Performance.  Greg Miller (Cranbrook) will give the distance coaches a wonderful way to incorporate Jack Daniels’ (the coach, not the drink) training theory/plan into an easy to use format.  You will hear about the Ben Davis program & what they are doing to recruit, train and retain high level athletes.  That’s not everyone, but full info will be forthcoming by email and brochures.
  • We will have the usual --- vendors to take a look at possible T&F purchases for your program, IATCCC annual meeting, IHSAA Rules Interpretation session - to get this responsibility accomplished, our wonderful Hall of Fame Ceremony (take a look at our web site to see who is being inducted), give away items from the vendors, and just the wonderful camaraderie of fellow coaches.  Plus, this is a great way to get into the flow of the season – a good way to re-adjust things before you get into daily practices.
  • Join us – we had over 700 coaches last year!!  Get your middle school and assistant coaches to come – listen, learn, enjoy, get fired up for the upcoming season!!

Michael Chastain, Clinic Director

IHSAA Cross Country

The girls and boys season were so exciting.  Congratulations go to Fishers and to Westfield… what great seasons these two teams had!  Rob Seymour (Fishers) and Scott Lidskin (Westfield) did a masterful job of coaching from leading the ranking polls all season long to finishing as undefeated IHSAA State Champions.  Our two individual IHSAA State Champions: Alex Banfich (Culver Academies) and Mike Fout (LaPorte) were nothing short of rock stars this season.  What a joy they were to watch just obliterate the competition this season!  These champions are two of the very best high school athletes in the United States.  A special shout out to all of the IHSAA State Qualifiers.

Mid East Cross Country All Star Meet

Indiana fielded a strong team that competed in the Mideast Meet of Champions on November 17th in Dayton, Ohio.  We had 10 Senior Boys and 10 Senior Girls represent Indiana in this All Star meet that involved teams from six different states.  The girls and the boys both placed 3rd in their races. Our girls’ team was led by Lacey Oeding (Jasper) in 9th place and the leading Indiana boy was Mike Fout (LaPorte) who was the individual winner in a new course record time.  Fout broke Bob Kennedy’s course record at Indian Rifle Park. A big “thank you” to our coaching staff, led by Jay White (Portage)

Nike Team Nationals Cross Country

Two of our Indiana girls’ teams have qualified for the Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Oregon.  Westfield and Lake Central will have a dream weekend at the Nike Headquarters and race at the Portland Meadows facility.  www.dyestat.com has all the coverage.  Congratulations to Westfield and to Lake Central.  Several of our Indiana teams ran in the Midwest Regional at Terre Haute, a great day and it was fun for hundreds of our Indiana kids…special thanks to Jeff Martin of Indiana State for putting on a show!  Best of luck to the Shamrocks and the Indians!!

Foot Locker Cross Country Regionals (Kenosha, WI)

Mike Fout (LaPorte), Tito Medrano (Lafayette Jeff) and Alex Banfich (Culver Academies) have earned trips to San Diego for the venerable Foot Locker National Championships.  All three placed in the top 10 to earn the right to compete at Balboa Park’s famous 5000 meter layout.  This will be Banfich’s third appearance.  Fout was a convincing winner of the Midwest Regional over the tough Parkside course in14:56.  Medrano placed 8th while Banfich took 6th in the girls race.  Results at www.dyestat.com

IATCCC Official of the Year

Most of our officials are great.  If you one in particular that you would like to nominate, please contact me with some background.(ASAP)  We vote at our December meeting on this item.

Indoor Track

The Hoosier State Relays Finals will be on Saturday, March 22, 2008.  This is as close to an indoor state championship as we have.  Qualifying will be on our web site www.iatccc.org

Several other meets leading up can get you there.  The Mideast Championships on March 8th and the Marshall Goss Relays on March 15th.  Again contact www.iatccc.org

Clinics and Camps

A good Pole Vault camp will be at Lawrence North on December 22-23, 2007…contact Bob Potter at robertpotter@msdlt.k12.in.us

Mark Harsha (Portage) and Steve Kent (Warren Central) both did a great job presenting at the National Throws Clinic two weeks ago in Dublin, Ohio.  We are real proud of you guys working at a national level!  Your association has great throws links on our web site…visit www.iatccc.org

Once again, Chuck Koeppen (Carmel) did a great job with the annual IATCCC State Cross Country Clinic.  We voted for the all state teams and had great speakers!  The proceeds from this event outfitted our All Star Cross Country team.  We were by far the best looking team in Dayton!  Thanks Chuck for all of your hard work for our sport.

Indy December Road Race

Celebrate the holidays by participating in the inaugural 5Ks of Christmas 5k Fun Run and Walk.  This event will start and finish at the NCAA Hall of Champions in downtown Indianapolis along the beautiful downtown canal!  Saturday, December 22 - 9:00 am

Event Website

As a long time supporter of Indiana high school cross country, Standing O Promotions would like to share some high school holiday cheer!  The Indiana high school cross country team that has the most participants in the 5Ks of Christmas will receive a cash award directly back to their cross country program.  Participants within this contest can include: High school XC team members ($10 entry fee), high school head and assistant XC coaches ($15 entry fee), and associated parents and direct family to high school team members ($15 entry fee).  The regular pre-registered entry fee amount is $18.  To validate entries per team and avoid any school registration confusion, team registrations must be combined entirely in one envelope and be received by mail December 20.  A master list of students, coaches and associated family is to be included.  The award winning school will be notified prior to the 5K and will receive a photo opportunity and presentation the day of the event.

So much going on….please join us on December 9th at Lawrence Central, we would love to see you there.

We are an organization of continuous improvement with the goal of helping you, the coach, serve our kids.  With all of that in mind, I wish the very best for you in the upcoming Christmas Season.

Have a great Holiday,
